Palm Springs, California (February, 2012)

In order to make it through the winter, when it is far too cold in Utah to cycle outdoors, we decided to pick a couple rides each year out of town.  Our pre-spring ride this year was in Palm Springs!  Mike and Annette joined us and we had a grand time!

On Wednesday, February 8, we drove to St. George and stayed the night.  On Thursday, we stopped in Beaver Dam, AZ to visit Kenny and Becky before heading on to Palm Springs.  We pulled into town just before dusk.  The desert city was warm and welcoming… although the windmills should have been somewhat foreboding to us as bikers… stay tuned for that lovely tale.

We stayed in Palm Desert, a short drive into Palm Springs, at the Marriott Residence Inn.  We had a nice room with two private bedrooms and baths.  Perfect for the four of us!  The people were all friendly and as the town prepared for the event we couldn’t have been more excited for the big ride.

We spent Friday visiting the Palm Springs Ariel Tramway… wow! What a view!  It is pretty remarkable considering much of Palm Springs is at or below sea level and we climbed to 8,500 feet in the tram!  We ate lunch at the top and enjoyed the breathtaking views.  http://www.pstramway.com/

We picked up our registration materials downtown, where the festivities were staged.  There were lots of booths with cycling gear and clothing, freebies, fun stuff, etc.

That night, we prepared for our ride by eating a pasta dinner, checking our bikes, picking our clothing, and mentally readying ourselves for the challenge ahead.
